Yamaha MODX8: 88-Key Synthesizer and Controller

The MODX8 combines two sound engines from Yamaha’s flagship Montage: AWM2 sampling and FM-X synthesis. The AWM2 engine offers 128-note polyphony, 5.67 GB Waveform ROM, and 1 GB Flash ROM for user waveforms. FM-X, with eight operators and 88 algorithms, provides 64-note polyphony and allows complex sound design. Together, they enable dynamic sound development and Motion Control integration for controlling both engines.

Controls and Interface

MODX8 features a 7” touch TFT color display, a Super Knob controlling up to 128 parameters, four assignable knobs, and four sliders. The keyboard has 88 GHS keys. The synthesizer also offers Live Sets, Motion Sequences, Envelope Follower, and a Vocoder effect, allowing parameters to be controlled by rhythmic data or external audio sources.

Audio and MIDI Features

The MODX8 has a 2-in/10-out multi-channel USB audio interface compatible with PC, Mac, and iOS. It includes Steinberg Cubase AI DAW software and supports 16 MIDI channels. Both analog and digital inputs allow external sound sources to be processed via MODX8 DSP.

Effects and Sound Design

The instrument includes a full set of VCM-based effects and processors, identical to those in Yamaha’s professional digital mixers, supporting up to 27 simultaneous effects. The sound library includes acoustic and electric pianos, guitars, basses, drums, orchestral instruments, and vintage and modern synth sounds. MODX8 offers extensive tools for sound sculpting and creating custom tones.
