Waldorf Iridium Desktop MK2 – advanced multi-engine wavetable and hybrid synthesizer in compact desktop format
Waldorf Iridium Desktop MK2 is the next generation of the acclaimed Iridium synthesizer and builds on the multi-engine architecture developed in the Quantum and Iridium series. The new version introduces an upgraded CPU platform with more RAM and expanded flash storage, enabling larger sample libraries and more advanced synthesis possibilities. The result is a powerful desktop synthesizer designed for sound design, music production and live performance.
With three oscillators, multiple synthesis methods and an extensive modulation system, Iridium MK2 delivers an exceptionally wide sonic palette – from classic wavetable synthesis to granular, sampling and resonator-based sound design.
Overview and features
Iridium Desktop MK2 builds on Waldorf’s well-known hybrid architecture where several synthesis methods can be combined within a single instrument. Each sound can use three oscillators, and each oscillator can operate with different synthesis engines, making it possible to create complex layers of wavetable, sample-based and spectral sounds.
The improved hardware platform provides expanded sample memory and increased flexibility for advanced sound design. At the same time, the system now offers extended multi-timbrality with up to four layers within a single patch, enabling greater sonic depth and variation in both studio and live environments.
Seeds – a new synthesis method
One of the most significant additions in MK2 is the Seeds synthesis engine. It is inspired by wavetable synthesis where each wavetable represents a timbral journey through multiple waveforms. In Seeds, these timbral changes are dynamically generated from multiple underlying sub-oscillators called “Seeds”.
By combining techniques such as ring modulation, frequency modulation and noise-based elements, each stage in the sound evolution can be generated in real time. In addition to factory presets, users can also create and edit their own timbral structures and sonic trajectories.
Per-Note Parameter Locks
Iridium Desktop MK2 introduces the Per-Note Parameter Locks feature, developed in collaboration with Aphex Twin. This system allows each individual note to have its own parameter configuration.
Up to 128 notes can each be assigned up to 16 unique parameter variations. By holding a note and adjusting the controls, users can modify oscillator modes, filter parameters or effects specifically for that note. These settings are saved with the patch and can be viewed and edited on a dedicated page within the system.
Extended multi-timbral operation
The increased memory capacity allows up to four layers within a single sound. In addition to traditional layer and split modes, the MK2 introduces advanced multi-timbral modes such as round-robin and random-robin, adding greater variation and realism to repeated musical patterns.
This enables complex sound structures where multiple synthesis engines, oscillators and effects are combined to create deep and evolving sonic environments.
Protein “Flavour” control
MK2 also introduces a new parameter inspired by the Waldorf Protein synthesizer. The Flavour control adds subtle variations in timing, pitch and timbre. The result is more lively and organic sounds with micro-variations that reduce the static character often associated with digital synthesis.
Connectivity and integration
Iridium Desktop MK2 offers extensive connectivity for both studio setups and modular integration. MIDI communication is available through traditional DIN connectors as well as USB, and the instrument is compatible with the MIDI 2.0 standard.
In addition, several analogue control inputs allow the synthesizer to integrate with modular systems or external control environments.
